A Smarter Mobile Experience for Community Cargo Bike Sharing.

OurBike offers residents and small businesses access to shared electric cargo bikes, hosted by trusted local organisations and affordably priced for everyday journeys. But while the service was gaining traction, the mobile experience wasn’t fully supporting that growth.

Users often found onboarding confusing, and booking journeys could feel unintuitive. Key features like pausing a ride, reporting maintenance issues, or verifying user identity were missing or limited. It wasn’t always clear what type of bike was available, or whether it was ready to use. For hosts and support teams, limited visibility into bike status made it harder to manage fleets efficiently.

To support OurBike’s ambitions and provide a seamless, trustworthy experience for all users, the app needed a thoughtful redesign — one that prioritised clarity, security, and accessibility from the ground up.

Bluetooth Lock Integration:
We integrated AXA’s BLE SDK to enable secure bike unlocking and pausing directly from the app, reducing friction for users and hosts alike while ensuring compliance with insurance and security standards.

Flexible Booking Engine:
A key technical challenge was building a booking engine that could support both A2B (one-way) and B2B (round-trip) logic. This required custom workflows for location selection, time windows, pricing tiers, and post-ride validation.

Onboarding & Verification Pipeline:
To meet safety and insurance needs, we implemented an ID verification step as part of the onboarding process, allowing users to upload their ID and confirm eligibility before riding.

In-Ride State Management:
The platform tracks active ride states including paused, extended, and completed, ensuring users can adjust their journey in real time, and hosts can manage availability and usage more effectively.

Voucher Logic & Free Minutes:
To encourage uptake, we built in functionality to apply free minutes for first-time riders and manage business promo codes, all governed by rules around account type and usage history.

Scalable Cross-Platform Build:
The app was developed using React Native to support iOS and Android from a single codebase, reducing maintenance overhead and enabling rapid iteration across platforms.
